Marine Corps Marathon Training – Week 6

Weekly MarathonTraining Log

Monday – 60 minutes Easy Run (9:08)                                                                                                                             Easy miles to start the week – loving these 60-minute workouts because it gives me enough time to complete the “Core Challenge” that Mark and I have going for the month of August (more below)

Tuesday – 60 minutes Easy Run (9:17)                                                                                                                           I should have snapped a picture BUT I headed inside for this run – my first inside run for this training cycle.  IT was boring but I got through it with podcasts and people watching

Wednesday – Quality Session (80-minute workout; 1×20 minutes @ marathon pace)                                             Mid 70’s at 5 am and 70ish (oppressive due point) at 5 pm – this was a hot and humid slog.  I did most of the run in Old Wethersfield and the 20 minutes of marathon work I headed to the track.  Needless to say, I did not hit my paces on the track but I did the workout so I will take that as a win.

Thursday  – Off Day!

Friday – 60 minutes Easy Run (9:01)                                                                                                                               Cool breeze and a gorgeous sunrise – I’ll take it!

Saturday – Quality Session (2 mile warm up; 8x1mile – marathon pace; 2 mile cool down)                                     After Wednesday’s less than stellar Quality Session on Wednesday – I knew I needed to buckle down regardless of the weather.  And that weather was RAIN.  I really tried to time it but there was this one cell that would just not move over my running route.  After 30 minutes of refreshing the radar on my phone, I put my big girl pants on and headed out.

As I was in the middle of the workout I ran past another runner  and made the comment “Good to see someone else out here.” Her response “We’re all training for something.”

That stuck with me because 1) races are pretty much run in any condition and you just have to roll with it and 2) we are all on our own journey.  Fast, slow or in between – all of us running in this weather is out there for a reason.

It calmed me a bit – for a while, I have been trying to “get back” focusing on trying to achieve a goal pace.  I think, though, that I need to change my mindset – it’s not about running X:xx:xx at Marine Corps – it’s about getting there and crossing the finish line happy and healthy.

Sunday – 60 minute Easy Run                                                                                                                                          So this run was cut short.  I don’t know what happened but I was cruising along and the next thing I knew I felt a pull in my left hamstring – Ouch!  Even stretching did not help, so I took the smart (and slow) route and walked back home.  Mark and Harley were on their walk and with them, I completed a total of 5 miles.

The rest of the day was spent resting, stretching, rolling, and icing (And praying if I am being honest).

What I am loving this week – AUGUST CORE CHALLENGE!

Shout out to Mark for this!

He mentioned that he wanted to start planking and suggested we plant for at least 1 minute every day and do at least 10 push ups.  The consequence for not completing a day – a $2 scratchie to the other person.

All was going well until last week he increased the time for the Planks AND push-ups BUT it’s become part of our morning routine and since I am NOT going to lose – I am keeping up!  I even added some (not so pretty) Burpees.

Can’t wait to see where this leads.
